The cantata Bringet dem Herrn Ehre seines Namens (Bring to the Lord the honor of His Name), BWV 148 was probably composed in 1723 for the 17th Sunday after Trinity. Due to the impossibility of precisely cataloging Bach’s œuvre (a process which began only after the master’s death), the cantata cannot be dated with complete certainty. Featuring an obbligato trumpet part, the first movement begins as an extended sinfonia with homophonic interjections by the choir. This is followed by a choral fugue, after which the sinfonia is then repeated, now with an uninterrupted choral part. While the solo instrument in the tenor aria can only be inferred (probably violin), the second aria features the brilliant scoring of three "oboes" (probably two oboes d’amore and an oboe da caccia), alto and continuo. Since the two recitatives are assigned to alto and tenor, no further soloists are needed. The final chorus survives without the original text, so our edition contains a suggested text.
