Giovanni Gabrieli

Giovanni Gabrieli (c. 1555 - 1612) was a composer, organist and priest from Venice. He is considered the greatest Venetian composer of the late Renaissance, one of the most important musicians of his time and a textbook example of the changing zeitgeist that marked the beginning of a new era: the Baroque. Upon his death in 1612, Gabrieli left an exceptional oeuvre of instrumental music, in which genres such as the canzona, sonata and motet are represented. Giovanni Gabrieli developed a special polychoral technique (cori spezzati) to which his name is still attached today.
