This book is an intimate look at Joe's approach to playing the Coltrane classic Giant Steps. It is not a look into Coltrane's approach (please see John Coltrane Plays Coltrane Changes by Masaya Yamaguchi (in C) and John Coltrane Plays Giant Steps by David Dempsey (in Bb) for note for note transcriptions and Countdown to Giant Steps by Andy LaVerne for graded play along recordings and exercises), but rather a modern look into the Coltrane classic using quartal/quintal intervals and great chord/melody ideas - while not for the beginner, it is a wonderful source for new approaches and ideas for the guitarist (as well as all instruments) to play Giant Steps. Included are complete solos (each spotlighting different techniques, such as unison notes, triplets, fourths/fifths) ii-V-I lines, how to memorize the piece, reharmonizing and walking bass lines. Joe Diorios book on Giant Steps, while challenging, is worth the time to master and is highly recommended.
