Puccini's 3 Minuets for string quartet is a fairly early work he composed just prior to being discovered as an opera composer of the highest rank. Reading some reviews of the piece leaves one believing they are of limited merit and are not to be found in his later operas. However, as someone who has played in the orchestra of some of his operas, I hear all kinds of familiar quotations especially in the lower parts. The 1st minuet is especially beautiful. The three minuets are set for clarinet choir for Bb clarinet 1-3, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, and contra/contralto. I left the Eb soprano out this time to emphasize the mellow nature of the pieces. .
