Geysers was inspired by the awe and power of Yellowstone National Park’s geothermal wonders. While Old Faithful is the most iconic, it’s just one of over 500 geysers in the park—more than anywhere else on Earth—fueled by volcanic heat just miles beneath the surface. These eruptions, sometimes blasting thousands of gallons of water over 180 feet high, are both humbling and majestic. This fanfare for brass and percussion captures the drama of these unforgettable natural events.
While Old Faithful is the best known geyser in Yellowstone NationalPark, it is only one of over five hundred geysers there, a numberrepresenting over half of our planet's active thermal features. Theincredible amount of geological activity that occurs in the park is due tothe fact that much of Yellowstone sits inside an ancient volcanic calderathat, over hundreds of thousands of years, has filled the space beneathits collapsed crater with lava - in many cases as little as two to fivemiles beneath the surface. This volcanic activity heats the groundwaterand creates the thermal features Yellowstone is famous for. However, knowing the science and geology doesn’t diminish the visceralexperience of witnessing the eruption of Yellowstone’s most famousgeyser. Old Faithful expels anywhere from four to eight thousandgallons of superheated water over 180 feet in the air; the explosivepower and majesty of this iconic geyser is simultaneously awe inspiringand humbling. My experience of witnessing this natural wonder servedas the inspiration for this fanfare for brass and percussion.
