Gaude An LB Anniversary for Large Orchestra was composed as the result of winning the Colorado Music Festival’s annual “Click” competition, judged entirely by audience on-line voting. With the Bernstein Anniversary approaching, I wanted to create an homage to this 20th-century titan by emulating his own tradition of creating “Anniversary” pieces for his friends. Loosely basing the work on the theme from Bernstein’s “On the Waterfront” score, I strove to paint a musical picture of the love, energy and pure joy that seemed to pour out of every performance Lenny gave as a conductor, while winking to his own compositional style with its colorful rhythms, melodies and harmonies. -Julian Wachner.
