“Garden Party”: Rick (Ricky) Nelson, a popular child actor and ‘teen idol’ performer managed to grow up with the times in which he was living and he evolved. He evolved but his audience didn’t. While performing at the 1971 Rock ‘n Roll Spectacular at Madison Square Garden in New York City, as he was performing his set, the audience booed. Thinking the booing was directed at him, he left the stage. Thinking the audience reaction was because of his long hair, his ‘mod’ outfit or a reaction to the tune he sang – a song that was a cover and not one of his own – he left the arena broken and disheartened and did not appear on stage for the finale. His song “Garden Party” (1972) is the result of that performance, and it leaves us with this ‘moral’: “You can’t please everyone, so you’ve got to please yourself.” But the lyrics in-total are a wonderful, historical narrative of the times (1971): mention is made of Yoko Ono and her Walrus (a reference to John Lennon); his fellow performers Chuck Berry, Bo Didley, et al – which makes this tune an ideal contemporary music history lesson in-&-of-itself. This arrangement is scored essentially for a jazz chorus of SATB, with divisi occurring throughout, to be performed a cappella. A piano reduction is included for rehearsal purposes. Performance time: 4:45+-.
