His gift was to look at a film and hear and create a score that captures the essence, the very heart of a story and it's characters. There is an operatic nature to every film cue ennio created. Gabriel's Oboe expresses the character of the dramic situation in the film, The Mission. It is fairly rare that a solo oboe would have such a powerful and expressive role in both the story and in the score. This arrangement is very faithful to Ennio's use in his score, but the first part forshadows the theme with only the string quartet, setting the stage. This piece features the solo oboe but also the quartet does not take a back seat at all. Every part matters in this arrangement. Every part matters musically and dramatically. Arranged for Solo Oboe and String Quartet, this one is a great change of pace selection. Good music.
