Set in a warm and expressive Slowly, espressively, the oboe carries the legendary, weeping melody with pure lyrical freedom. Below, the flute, clarinet, horn, and bassoon provide a rich, transparent, and velvety cushion of accompaniment. As the piece flows into the passionate Più mosso, the ensemble expands into a glorious, full-bodied symphonic woodwind climax before gently winding down to a peaceful, serene conclusion.
