An arrangement for a quartet comprising three basset horns and bass clarinet of a fugue by the Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848). Although best known today for his vast operatic output (at least 65 operas), Donizetti also produced a large number of instrumental, chamber and vocal works, that included 16 symphonies and 19 string quartets. This fugue is one of a number of pieces in this musical form that he composed for unspecified instruments quite early on in his life (the manuscript for this one is dated 1817). The key of the piece has been changed from its original A minor to F minor to better suit the instruments used in this arrangement. The music makes use of some interesting chromatic passages and would be an unusual addition to any recital program. Full score and parts. Difficulty level : Intermediate/Advanced.
