After Beethoven passed away, many of his compositions were left unpublished. A few people took up the task to organize and categorize these works so that the public were able to perform and enjoy them.This fugue was not assigned an "Opus" number at the time it was written, so it bears an "H" for Willy Hess, the musicologist in the 1950's, who researched and published Beethoven's works that had not been cataloged in the 19th century.This piece is the first from a collection of nine 4-part fugues, written around 1794-95. This arrangement is scored for flute quartet: Piccolo and 3 C flutes. There is an optional alto part in lieu of the 3rd flute part.I hope your quartet and your audience will enjoy this piece.
