Luther's Carol. Composed by Martin Luther. Arranged by Erik Routley. Christmastide, Christmas Day. Christmas. Tune Name: Vom Himmel Hoch. Sacred. Octavo. 8 pages. GIA Publications #2349. Published by GIA Publications (GI.G-2349).
Text by Martin Luther.
All stanzas except the last should be sung lightly, with a tone designed to express innocence. But as the piece advances it should grow in enthusiasm without becoming pompous, until the final chorale, which should be sung by everybody present if possible, with as much organ as the vocal sound can stand. Luther probably wrote this with the home rather than the church in mind, so use chil, dren where possible, and create a friendly domestic playful atmosphere right down to the end of stanza 7. From that point it can quite quickly become a cosmic song of praise "with angels and archangels." For SATB voices with optional solo and soli, accompanied by organ with notes for including various instruments. The text is from The Martin Luther Christmas Book, translated and arranged by Roland H. Bainton, Copyright ©, 1948 by W. L. Jenkins. Used by permission of The Westminster Press.
