French Overture in B Minor BWV 831 Edition with Fingering by Johann Sebastian Bach Piano Solo - Sheet Music

By Johann Sebastian Bach

In 1735 Johann Sebastian Bach published his French Overture BMV 831 together with the famous Italian Concerto as the second part of his “Clavier-Ubung.” The designation Ouvertüre (Overture) can be somewhat misleading, since this work consists not just of an opening movement but also of a full-fledged partita with 11 movements: Ouverture, Courante, Gavotte I & II, Passepied I & 11, Sarabande, Bouree I & II, Gigue and Echo. In terms of melodic richness and rhythmic play it is on par with its sister-pieces from Part I of the “Clavier Ubung”, the 6 Partitas BMV 825-830.

Useful for the fingerings

First off, this is a marvelous work with a big prelude and ten great dance movements.I have the odd habit of buying multiple editions of the pieces on which I work. So I own the Peters, Wiener Urtext, and Barenreiter in addition. I got this edition for the fingerings. Compared to other editions, this gives pretty standard ornamentation. (The Barenreiter relying on the C-minor version is heavier on the ornamentation. The Wiener Urtext gives you both versions.) For pagination, though, the Wiener Urtext easily wins: in this edition as well as the Peters, the Gavottes, Passepieds, and Bourrees are divided by page turns. Barenreiter, with the same defect, gives bigger, somewhat easier to read print but no help (or interference) with fingerings. I like the Henle fingerings more than the Peters edition's fingerings.
