Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday! “Freedom” from the musical Shenandoah is one of the show’s most emotionally charged songs, because it lays bare the central conflict of the show’s story. The song isn’t a celebration so much as a question. What makes the song powerful is its moral tension. Rather than glorifying battle, “Freedom” exposes the cost of fighting over an idea that different people define in completely different ways. The song turns “freedom” into something urgent and unresolved instead of a simple patriotic slogan. This arrangements pinnacle is reached when the choir declares “Freedom,” a cappella and in full voice before the final statement. Sop. & Alto G#3-F5; Baritone G#2-D4.
