By Kenneth R. Benoit. The Five Flags Suite was written as a tribute to the University of West Florida as the university celebrated its 30th anniversary in 1999. Each of the five movements is inspired by one of the five flags which has flown over the city of Pensacola, where the university is located. France , the third movement, is musically depicted in a can-can-like scherzo.
