Clemence de Grandval was an important French female composer of the 19th century, especially prasied by Saint-Saens, with whom she studied. Only two of the four pieces were published during Grandval's lifetime and the other two aresourced from a copyist's copy given by Gillet to an oboeist who emigranted to the United States. The four movements are Lamento, Valse, Andante Espressivo (Air d'Atala) and Finale.
