This is an enigmatic piece which was inspired when I was considering entering a competition to write music for the Japanese Koto.
I looked at the techniques incolced and relised that I did not have time to do this justice but in the meantime I had done some study of Japanese scales and thought that I could use the material that I had been looking at in a piece for recorder quartet. Here it is in a flute version of that bpiece.

A Koan is a story or a saying that a Zen priest will use to illustrate a point that is not understandable by conventional rational means. Even the title of this set is somewhat enigmatic.
