"Virtuoso pianist Bill John Newbrough asked me to write for him Concert Etudes. I used the songs in my song cycle for these Etudes --- playing both singing part and accompaniment together makes for quite an etude, especially when the accompaniment part is already a challenge on its own. Bill John loves the Jewish mode of Ahava Rabbah (Great Love) and even though hints of it appear in all my music, I did compose one of the Etudes specifically in this mode and even named it that way. The pieces are virtuosic sounding, but lay nicely under the hands and are not overly difficult. The music is tonal, very accessible, and quite Romantic.
