Here are four of the most well-known folk songs representing four Asian countries:
S. Korea- Arirang, China - Descendent Of The Dragon, Japan- Cherry Blossom (Sakura, Sakura), and Viet Nam Flower Tree (Ly cay bong ) . In an effort to expand the curriculum, teaches will find this work useful to credit these countries with the music of their heritage.
The song "Descendants of the Dragon" was written by Hou Dejian in late 1978 and became a nationalistic anthem in the 1980s. It was first recorded and released by Lee Chien-Fu, and Hou himself also recorded it. The song expresses sentiments of Chinese nationalism and has been covered by various artists, including Wang Leehom. It became highly popular in Taiwan and China, symbolizing a pan-Chinese call for unity and national identity.
"Arirang" is widely regarded as Korea’s most iconic folk song, with approximately 3,600 variations across 60 different versions, all featuring the refrain "arirang, arirang, arariyo". Scholars trace its origin to the mountainous region of Jeongseon in present-day Gangwon Province, with some local traditions suggesting it dates back to the Gorye period The earliest documented mention appears in a 1756 manuscript, though oral traditions likely predate this record.
In essence, "Arirang" is not just a song but a living cultural symbol, encapsulating the history, emotions, and identity of the Korean people.
"Sakura, Sakura" "Cherry blossoms, cherry blossoms"), also known as "Sakura", is a traditional Japanese folk song depicting spring, the season of cherry blossoms. It is often sung in international settings as a song representative of Japan. Contrary to popular belief, the song did not originate in ancient times; it was a popular, urban melody of the Edo period.
The song "Ly Cay Bong" is a traditional Vietnamese folk song that reflects the beauty of rural life and the innocence of youth. It is often associated with cotton plants, symbolizing purity and community bonds. The song has been composed in contemporary styles while still embodying Vietnamese folk values, making it a beloved piece among the Vietnamese people.
