This is a four-movement piece depicting the character of four New Zealand birds: the Pīwakawaka, Kārearea, Kākāpō and Kiwi. It is a fun piece aimed at intermediate standard brass bands.

The Pīwakawaka, or Fantail, is an inquisitive and lively bird. It will often follow you for some time through the bush, hovering for short spells in front of you, then posing on a nearby branch, with tail feathers spread.

The music of Kārearea captures the spirit of the New Zealand falcon in flight: drifting, swooping, and diving through vast skies. From serene uplift to sudden bursts of motion, the music mirrors the bird’s majestic presence and sharp precision. Calm and noble above the landscape, the falcon soars, untethered and free.

A very rare, flightless, nocturnal, parrot-like bird is the Kākāpō. It moves slowly and has an air of great sadness about it, almost as if it knows of the great peril that the species is in.

The Kiwi is another nocturnal species of flightless bird, and the adopted symbol of the New Zealand people. It forages through the undergrowth, sticking its long bill deep into the ground in search of insects.

This work is also available both for orchestra and concert band.
