"Craig Mason’s concert band work, 'For Harriet,' brilliantly embodies the spirit of Harriet Tubman through thoughtful orchestration and thematic references which highlight her struggles and triumphs throughout her journey on the Underground Railroad.. Mason helps explore these ideas through the use of 15 percussion instruments which help build suspense and excitement throughout the work. The work also has a section 'open to solos' which represents how the rescued enslaved people had to improvise to survive on their journey to freedom. Mason’s attention to detail is evident throughout the work, which is sure to be enjoyed by both performers and audiences alike."
