By Kacey Musgraves. By Kacey Musgraves and Shane McAnally. Arranged by David Maddux. This edition: pdf. Contemporary, Country, Pop. Octavo. 15 pages. David Maddux #5197305. Published by David Maddux (A0.508123).
Kacey Musgraves started “Follow Your Arrow” as a poem for a close friend heading to Paris to study abroad — giving her a little arrow necklace and a note that said “kiss lots of boys.” That scribbled send-off grew, with co-writers Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, into one of country music’s most delightfully defiant anthems. When Musgraves performed it at the 2013 CMA Awards, the “roll up a joint” lyric was censored — yet the song went on to win CMA Song of the Year the following year. Co-writer McAnally later reflected that the song “did not check any of the boxes with radio — the only thing it had going for it was that it was the truth.” Maddux’s full TTBB chorus arrangement leans hard into the song’s winking twang — the lyrics practically wink at a gay men’s chorus audience — and builds to a joyful, full-voiced finish. Pure twang, wry grin, zero apologies.
