Performance Notes.
The amateur violin player has a limited repertoire of pieces available for solo violin. Both Bach and Paganini have furnished the virtuoso with excellent music, however the violin player of modest abilities is often to be found in want of either an accompanist, or of a considerably more prodigious talent. This Sonata has been created for the violin player practising at home and wishing for something more interesting to play than just scales. Thus this piece is musically complete without an accompaniment. The music is contemporary in that it has been written in recent times, but will only alarm the neighbours if played really badly.
I have tried to keep dynamic markings and other indicators of expression to a minimum. Partly because I cannot stand bossy people, and partly because I believe music is best played in a spirit of improvisation. Discover how you think the music should go, and then discover how it can be played differently. The one great advantage of solo music is that you have no companions to fit your music in with, thus on a whim you can speed up or slow down, add rubato or drop the dynamic level to a whisper, and there will be no consequent ensemble disasters. It is entirely up to how you feel at that moment. I often ignore my own dynamic markings, they are just a guide. The sonata can be played in first position with open strings. Occasionally I add a drone bass, especially when playing the repeats.
It is a 'Folk Sonata', by that I mean it is influenced by both classical and folk traditions. It was inspired by a walk up Beacon Hill in Leicestershire, however Beethoven’s dictum on the relationship between music and landscape applies, they are “more the expression of feeling than painting.”
