"Foi um rio que passou em minha vida" (It Was a River That Passed Through My Life) is the second studio album by Rio de Janeiro samba musician Paulinho da Viola, released in 1970. "Foi um Rio Que Passou em Minha Vida" is also the song that gives the album its name. It was released in 1969 at the TV Tupi Monthly MPB Fair and became the biggest hit of 1970, propelling Paulinho to national fame.
Paulinho, from the Portela samba school, wanted to compensate his schoolmates with this song for a song released the previous year, "Sei lá Mangueira" (I Don't Know Mangueira), written by him and Hermínio Bello de Carvalho as a tribute to Mangueira's rival school, which became a great success.
The song wasn't Portela's samba theme for the 1970 carnival, but in the documentary "Meu Tempo é Hoje" (My Time is Today), Paulinho recounts how enthusiastically it was received during the warm-up and sung by everyone, not just during the parade that had just ended.
