Advanced work, esp. challenging Flute part. If Beethoven had written a flute quintet! Excellent ensemble writing from 1823, all movements fun for all players, popular for audiences. Quintet parts are available from online sources (IMSLP, Silvertrust), but no score exists. Extensive ensemble interactions difficult to sort out without a score. Beethoven admired Kuhlau's work and even challenged him to compositional games! Op. 51 has 2 other works, all written to utilize the new key structure of metal flutes, 2 violas balance the treble Fl/Vn. It’s also been arranged for flute and piano. Kuhlau (1786-1832) was not a flutist but a pianist and prolific composer. Though German, he was responsible for introducing works of Beethoven to Denmark after fleeing Germany to avoid conscription to Napoleon’s army in 1810.
