Composed by Alan Menken. Arranged by Eric R. This edition: pdf, streaming. 20th Century, Broadway, Film/TV, Musical/Show. Score. 3 pages. Overture & Storybook Musical Arrangements #1221366. Published by Overture & Storybook Musical Arrangements (A0.1654888).
'Flotsam and Jetsam' is the first underscore cue from The Little Mermaid (1989) in which we are introduced to Ursula, the film's villain. In this scene, Ursula's henchmen (her pet eels, Flotsam and Jetsam) spy on Ariel and this gives Ursula the notion that she may be able to overthrow King Triton afterall. The 'Flotsam and Jetsam' cue opens with the Poor Unfortunate Souls melody. Composer Alan Menken was inspired by German cabaret for Ursula's musical theme, and this can be heard with the minor chord with add9 motif - it's both seductive and campy in nature. The 'Flotsam and Jetsam' theme is heard later in the film as well, when eels capitalize on Ariel's despair and suggest that Ursula can make her dreams come true. It's also featured during "Eric to the Rescue".
The Little Mermaid (1989) score garnered Alan Menken his first 2 Academy Awards (best original score and best original song), with many more Oscar winnings to follow.
This arrangement includes some extended versions of the musical motifs. It also incorporates elements from Alan Menken's original piano demo score for this scene; making it more comprehensive to play as a solo on the piano. It is a reduction of the full orchestra, and is suited for intermediate pianists. Chords are marked throughout.
