This composition was commissioned for the Mid-South Symphonic Band to commemorate its 35th anniversary. Founded in 1990, the band has fostered a vibrant musical community, bringing together 50 to 70+ dedicated musicians from the greater Chattanooga area each week.
When tasked with creating a work for this significant milestone, I considered various thematic inspirations, including those that might evoke the spirit of Chattanooga and the surrounding states of Georgia and Tennessee. However, I was ultimately drawn to the intrinsic power and versatility of the ensemble itself, particularly the wind instruments.
This piece explores the dynamic energy inherent in wind playing, where soaring woodwind passages and majestic brass statements are propelled by a driving percussion pulse. The resulting sonic landscape evokes a sense of flight, a metaphor for the band's own journey of musical exploration and shared passion. It is my sincere hope that this composition captures the spirit and vitality of the Mid-South Symphonic Band, celebrating their rich history and looking forward to their continued musical endeavors.
