Five Variants Dives and Lazarus
This is Vaughan Williams at his best. The orchestra is subdivided in violas and 'cellos and some of the 'cello 1 part is in tenor clef. A competent soloist is, therefore, required. The harp part works well on piano if no harpist is available. The music has all the ethereal beauty of the Tallis Fantasia and benefits from a church/ cathedral like performance space. Whilst it is not as challenging technically, it is nonethe less engaging enough for a good school group or amateur ensemble. I highly recommend the work and loved conducting it.
