Amlin’s 15-minute collection of colorful preludes begins with riveting Variations, at first seeming like one fluid toccata until the theme and variants reveal themselves. Elegy is a dramatic slow movement in memory of a friend who passed at a young age, followed by Aria composed as a memorial to Leonard Bernstein (with a few winks to the latter’s compositional fingerprints). A Birthday Greeting is a pianist’s gift to his former piano teacher, and the suite ends with the jaunty South End Rag.
