I have attempted to begin addressing this issue with these set of Five Heartwarming Pieces. As a concert guitarist, I would be more than happy to play any of these pieces on stage despite them being aimed at lower-level players. I very much hope you enjoy them.
3am Prelude
The kind of music I would want to play at 3am with the sound echoing around a still, quiet house. This is a mood piece which uses elements of ‘empty space’ as part of its composition.
Drumlin
I composed this back in January 1993. I had just arrived back to my cold student house in Birmingham, UK after the Christmas break. I was the first back, all alone, so I lit the gas fire, took my guitar and this tune fell out of my fingers. It has stayed with me ever since but this is the first time I have committed it to paper. I have performed this in concerts on occasion. It sounds great with a capo on the 2nd fret, worth a try!
Archidona
On a road trip from Granada to Seville in Spain, I casted my eye upon this wonderful white-washed town in the distance, nestled at the foot of a large hill, surrounded by olive groves. I was unable to stop and visit but I wondered what it would be like to wander its streets. I later learned that the town is called Archidona and it lies in Malaga province. This piece is written out of my fascination with what I saw of the town from a distance, what I have read about it, and my longing to go there and visit!
Late Nights at Ronnie's
Written with memories of my frequent visits to Ronnies Scott’s Jazz Club as a student. This could be the introduction to that last ‘Thank you for coming, drive home safely’ number. Alternatively, it could be a pianist tinkling the ivories solo whilst everyone else packs away after the gig?
Song of the Moors
Written with golden memories of walking on Ilkley Moor, Yorkshire as a child. I have tried to capture its wild, bleak beauty and its vast expanse.

As a teacher, I have often felt there is a need to expand the range of compelling, interesting and genuinely beautiful music available for intermediate (grade 3-5) guitarists to play.
