Fish ‘n’ Chips
For many, “Fish ’n’ Chips” isn't just a meal; it’s a quintessential Sydney rite of passage. Stephen drew on his fond memories of growing up in Australia and visiting his favorite fish and chip take away near Manly Beach, to help this rondo captures the sun-soaked joy of a a great evening at the beach.
The main theme is bright and appetizing, but as any Sydney local knows, peace on the sand is short-lived. Enter the seagulls. Almost the moment you sit down, you’re surrounded. The music shifts as the tuba takes over the melody, personifying the impatient, cheeky, and downright brazen birds swooping in for a stray chip.
Once the chaos subsides, a soulful trombone solo signals a satisfied end to the meal - that warm, “full belly” feeling as the sun sets - before the piece returns to a final, joyous celebration of a perfect day.
BlechMafia's experience: “Fish 'n' Chips” is a catchy jazz piece and always an audience favourite at our concerts! The quartet version has been extensively workshoped with groups of all sizes, with participants often singing the melody long after rehearsals have finished! A great addition to the BlechMafia repertoire.
