First Flute is intended as a seven lesson teaching and learning resource for players at the outset of their flute studies. The music often deals with the earliest notes learnt upon the instrument via improvisation, solos, duets, variable ensemble, listening exercises and 'vocal' concepts. We have deliberately included the words to some of the music to offer a sense of relevance in terms of breathing, rhythm and line. The lesson plan format can be rejected of course in favour of a more ‘pick and mix’ approach although the author has tried to offer some bite-sized exercises over the course of seven lessons.
