But this piece is about more than a fledgling leaving the nest. It is about the human experience of surviving the unexpected. Those moments we didn’t ask for and don’t want and yet they bring out the best in us. We rise to the occasion. We are changed by them. We are a better person because of them.
The form is: intro-A-A-B-A. The run time is about 6 ½ minutes. I don’t think the parts pose any particularly difficult challenges, just reading a bunch of different key signatures and the intro has a few quick meter changes. The altos and basses go up to high F.
If your ensemble does not have an E-flat flute available, do try to scrounge one up. The range and color add so much to the ensemble. For the sad situation where there is no E-flat flute to be found within a hundred miles, I have included a transcription of the solo part for piccolo. There is no piccolo in the ensemble.
The ensemble is heavy on the low flutes. There are two C-flute parts, two alto parts, two bass parts, and a contrabass part which is required, although it could be played on a regular bass flute if no contra is available.
