compositions of the last 50 years and it is a work that exhibits a rhythmic and harmonic
complexity, interesting and surprising at the same time, that demands full attention from
the performers. It is a true tour de force for any ensemble, be it instrumental or vocal.
In 2004, I began to write what would be the main lines of this arrangement, which
was delayed for 16 years, among other projects. And it is not until this period of
confinement that I have been able to retrieve the initial notes from my portfolio. After
more than a month of work, I have finally been able to conclude what at first was a
long-awaited task, which is to be able to provide a choral version of one of the most
important contributions of the Metheny-Mays tandem to the jazz universe.
I just hope that, just as The First Circle became a workhorse in the repertoires of
student ensembles around the world, this arrangement will do the same in the
repertoire of college choirs.
