This piece was written by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1880 to celebrate the Russian military's defense against Napoleon in 1812. It first became a popular American patriotic piece when it was used by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra to celebrate the United States of America's 200th birthday in 1976.
