Composed by Giovanni Catellani. Arranged by Peet du Toit. This edition: pdf. Classical. 6 pages. Peet du Toit #1455793. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1897348).Beethoven was very interested in music for the theatre. In 1803 he was appointed composer of he main theatre in Vienna. Fidelio, first staged in 1815, is the only opera which Beethoven completed. The first version, Leonore, was a failure when it was performed in 1805.
Beethoven rewrote Leonore twice, tried different libretti by three poets, reworked many songs, and wrote four overtures. The final version was a huge success. In Fidelio, Beethoven explored an idea he was very interested in, that of the just ruler. It was the firt opera to have suh a strong political message.
Here is an abbreviated version for a String Quartet.
