Fermarono i cieli is a traditional Italian Christmas lullaby composed by Alfonso Maria de' Liguori (1969 - 1787), a Neapolitan bishop. The lyrics describe the Virgin Mary trying to put baby Jesus to sleep by singing him a lullaby.
The title "Fermarono i cieli" alludes to what is described in the apocryphal Gospel of James, regarding the birth of Jesus. When Jesus came into the world, the heavens stopped, and the world remained still for a few moments.
