It later became world-famous as “Fascination”, with lyrics by Maurice de Féraudy.
Although often associated with the Viennese waltz tradition, Fascination belongs more closely to the London and Parisian salon style of the Belle Époque — elegant, cosmopolitan, and deeply romantic.
The original title, “Tzigane”, did not refer to an ethnic origin, but rather to a musical character admired throughout Europe at the time — expressive, passionate, and slightly exotic, inspired by Eastern European and Romani melodies. The result is a warm, lyrical, and gently rubato waltz that captures the nostalgic charm of early 20th-century European salons.
This brass quintet arrangement highlights the graceful melodic line and lush harmonic texture of Marchetti’s work while preserving its delicacy and lyrical charm.
Arranger’s Recommendation:
For a softer and more lyrical tone, performers are encouraged to use flugelhorns or cornets instead of trumpets. These instruments offer a warmer, rounder sound that suits the expressive character of the piece.
