Faronells Ground, originally published in The Division Violin (1684), edited by John Playford, and reprinted in TheDivision Flute (1706), is a staple of the treble recorder repertoire in its standard form of melody plus bass. This arrangement for SATB Recorder Quartet transposes the original G minor, which fits the treble comfortably, into D minorand gives the lead to the descant. This transposition allows the other instruments to sit comfortably within their compasses. I start with melody plus ground bass, unaccompanied. Farinel's 11 movements follow, with each instrument allowed a voice as the variations develop. The top line is always Farinel's, as is the bass, but they are swapped in the instrumental dialogues, which are all my own. The florid variation for treble may be omitted, but is there for those who might wish to have a bit of fun. Trills in the first presentation of the La Folia tune are original; all other suggestions, including tempi, are editorial. Please ornament at will.
