For flute choir, I arranged Hiroshi Ohguri’s Fantasy on Osaka Folk Tunes, one of the most celebrated works in the Japanese wind band repertoire. Originally composed in 1955 and premiered the following year, the work is renowned for its vivid incorporation of traditional festival music from Osaka, including the danjiri-bayashi heard at the Tenjin Festival of Osaka Tenmangu Shrine and the lively festival music associated with Ikutama Shrine. Rich in raw energy, brilliant orchestral color, and the earthy vitality characteristic of Ohguri’s music, the piece remains a landmark of postwar Japanese orchestral writing. This arrangement is based on the critical edition prepared by Kiyoyuki Tsujii. In this version, the driving rhythms of the festival percussion, the explosive momentum of the original score, and the dense, colorful sonorities of the wind and brass writing have been reimagined through the agility and transparency unique to a flute ensemble. The music moves dramatically between exhilarating, high-energy festival scenes and a hauntingly lyrical middle section that evokes the atmosphere of Osaka’s summer nights. Despite being written for a 9-part flute ensemble, the arrangement aims to achieve a rich and symphonic depth of sound comparable to that of a full wind band or orchestra, making it an effective choice for major concert programming.
