A Modern 23rd Psalm, Moravian-style
This modern anthem, commissioned for the 1990 Moravian Music Festival in Winston-Salem, NC, is a moving resetting of one of the most beloved of traditional Moravian hymns, JESUS MAKES MY HEART REJOICE, with text drawn from the 23rd Psalm. The four parts trade the delicate melody back and forth, interweaving over an unusual, somewhat dissonant accompaniment at its best on the organ. It works equally well with large choruses and small choirs -- even skilled quartets. It does need at least one strong tenor. Perfect for funerals and other meditative services, it's a useful alternative to BROTHER JAMES'S AIR, MY SHEPHERD WILL SUPPLY MY NEED, and other more familiar settings of the 23rd Psalm. I sang in the premiere, and the emotional ovation the performance receives remains a treasured memory.
