This fantasy for flute and piano is based on a Theme and Variation. However, unlike a traditional theme and variation, the theme used here, (which is based on a folk song "The Cliffs of Old Tynemouth" from the North East of England), is heard in it’s entirety at the very end of the piece. As each variation is heard more and more of the original melody is revealed and subsequently disguised until the final section of the music when the melody can be heard. The piece is rather like a musical metaphor for the eroding of the cliffs by the sea; as the constant ebb and flow of the sea (represented by the constant piano accompaniment) erodes the rock, the hidden secrets of the melody become more and more exposed until the melody is revealed.
