This is an extremely impressive and important work, which demands the highest level from both musicians and conductor. The subtitle of Fantastic Variations is 'Homage to Duarte Ferreira Pestana', referring to one of the most inspired composers for Portuguese bands, and there are moments in the piece of clear allusion to the works of Duarte Ferreira (specifically to his most famous work 'Arco-Íris' [Rainbow]).
