"Fantasias on a Hillside Theme" is not inspired by an English countryside, or anything else so lofty. It was instead inspired by places where I spent much of my life - in homes on the sides of hills. The work begins with a theme that sums up a good deal of what I felt living in those areas, and builds them into three "Fantasias," each with a different feel. It builds to a bravura Finale and wraps up in just under 13 1/2 minutes, drifting off to a soft conclusion. "Fantasias on a Hillside Theme" would be an excellent festival selection.
