The title of this "fantaisie" for recorder is borrowed from a familiar literary device – the epigram, a short poem with a witty twist at the end. There are three sections: the first is a bright feature for the treble recorder, which is repeated following the more solemn middle section using the tenor recorder. The dance-like final part mainly features the sprightly sopranino, but the dénouement is entrusted to the treble recorder. This is another addition to the long list of works by contemporary composers commissioned by the special talent of John Turner. It was composed in early 2009 with accompaniment for piano, or harpsichord, and a version is also available with an accompaniment for string orchestra.
Fantaisie Épigrammatique was first performed by John Turner (recorder) and Ian Thompson (harpsichord) in the Hallam Hall at Stockport Grammar School on 3rd September 2009.
