Evergreen Tree March is the product of a weeklong blizzard, during which all that could be seen outside was white snow and gray sky. The only exception to the snow and gray sky was a row of evergreen Cedar trees outside of one window. It was a relief to be able to see something with color and life.Evergreen Tree March should be played at a tempo of quarter note = 120 bpm. It's intended to have a fun quality and gives almost every instrument a moment to shine. The march is not written in strict march form, yet contains many hallmarks of traditional march form. Please be mindful of dynamic changes at rehearsal marks. Measures 21–28 should be considered the “break strain” and should be played with a full sound. The percussionists should pay particular attention and make sure there is a dynamic difference between accented and unaccented notes. In mm. 21–26, special attention should be given to the wind notes on count 4 as they should all be played short. Measure 29–36 should be treated like a trio in a march. Making sure that the flute part is heard above the rest of the band will give it the feel of a traditional, yet simple flute obbligato.
