Total symmetry, total contrary motion, total mirrored topography, total complementary fingerings in both hands, and the exclusive use of these two intervals, the minor 3rd and the perfect 4th. Sounds like it ought to produce a sterile, intellectual exercise of the worst sort. Yet, here is a sublime, serene and contemplative piece of music in the vein of Alan Hovaness or John Cage. It begins using all black keys, subtly morphing in one white key per hand, spelled as a flat, of course, and then changes key and course, as the figures become longer. Eventually, the motion is in 16-note triplets, having started out in 3/2 time as three half-notes. Oh, and by the way, all the black keys are Gone by then, and we have magically wound up in C Major! So much for setting limits upon the materials one uses as a constriction to artistry. On the contrary, it provides a unifying factor, and often a way of seeing the piano keyboard and music in new and very listenable ways. Running time is just under 5 mins 30 secs. MBB.
