Anthony Holborne
Anthony Holborne (1545-1602) was an English composer of the late Renaissance.
Though life details are obscure, he served Elizabeth I as a court musician, composing for various instruments and voice and studying music theory. He was highly regarded by many of his colleagues.
Holborne published "Pavans, Galliards, Almains and other short Aeirs, both grave and light, in five parts, for Viols, Violins or other Musicall Winde Instruments" in 1599.
The publication consisted of 65 pieces, mainly dance music and is one of the oldest consort music collections.
("Consort," a form of chamber music for small groups of instruments such as viols or recorders as seen in England or Germany, 16th-17th century.)
This arrangement was performed by Hanasaki Tokuharu HS Brass Octet (Tomoko Kawaguchi, Director) and Yokohama Toin Gakuen HS for the 2019 Ensemble Contest and reorchestrated for flexible ensemble.
I selected the following four pieces from the collection.
1. The Honie-suckle [Almaine]
2. Lullabie [Galliard]
3. The Fairie-round [Coranto]
4. Almaine
(Makoto Onodera).
