Enfin la beauté que j’adore
Étienne Moulinié (1599-1699) was a French Baroque composer. Born in Languedoc, as a child he sang at the Narbonne Cathedral. Through the influence of his brother Antoine, Moulinié gained an appointment at court, as the director of music for Gaston d'Orléans, the younger brother of the king.
This is one of his most famous songs, for voice and lute. I have arranged it for soprano and guitar.

Enfin la beauté que j’adore
1. Finally, the beauty whom I adore
Lets me know, upon her return,
That she is willing for me to see again
Those eyes for which I die of love.
But since I again see the beauty that inflames me,
Depart, my unhappiness!
Remove yourself from my soul!
2. The heavens, seeing that her absence
Took away all my contentment,
Acquiesced to my perseverance
By ending my cruel torment.
But since I again see the beauty that inflames me,
Depart, my unhappiness!
Remove yourself from my soul!
3. My wounds, change into delights!
My heart, cease your pains!
Love, banish my tortures!
My eyes, pour forth no more tears.
But since I again see the beauty that inflames me,
Depart, my unhappiness!
Remove yourself from my soul!
