Ember / Kindle by Paul Burnell. Composed 2006 for Tenor / Soprano Recorder and Guitar.
Total duration 9:00 approx.
The movements may be performed separately.
First performed by Duo Ricercare on 23 September 2006 at the Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre, Walton-on-Thames, UK.
Notes for recorder:
In Ember, where indicated ‘half blowing’, the player blows across the tenor recorder mouthpiece to produce a soft breathy sound. This instruction is cancelled with ‘normal’
In the soprano recorder part of Kindle, the player sings and plays at the same time where marked ‘+ sing’. The player should sing approximately the same notes at any octave, to produce a buzzy distorted sound. Where indicated ‘+ ornament freely’ the player may elaborate the notated melody with trills, mordents, grace notes, overblowing, flutter tonguing etc.
Notes for guitar:
In Kindle, from bar 109, the guitar part is notated to indicate a strummed rhythm. The lower stave shows the chord to be played. The upper stave shows the rhythm to be strummed, with the x note heads indicating the ‘muting’ of the fingered chord, where the fingers are lifted slightly. The strumming rhythm continues with the same pattern following the ‘etc.’ mark.
Programme note:
Ember / Kindle was written for Duo Ricercare - Andrew Collis (recorders) and Graham Roberts (guitar) - and was first performed by them in September 2006. The work is made up of two contrasting movements. ‘Ember’ features the guitar, with the tenor recorder player blowing across the mouthpiece to produce a soft breathy sound. In ‘Kindle’ the soprano recorder part becomes more melodic and energetic, and is eventually accompanied by a strumming guitar riff.
